2026 Theme

No unified global theme — WHO decentralizes the day, leaving activity planning to individual Member States.

Campaign Description

Launched by WHO in 2002 following the World Health Assembly's call for an annual physical-activity day, observed around 10 May each year as part of WHO's Global Strategy on Diet, Physical Activity and Health.

Theme Focus

Generates public awareness of the benefits of physical activity in preventing noncommunicable diseases (heart disease, diabetes, obesity). Countries organize their own walking, cycling, and community sport campaigns.

  • Prevent noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) through active living
  • Encourage active transportation, such as walking and cycling
  • Improve physical and mental well-being
  • Foster healthy lifestyles in schools, workplaces, and communities
  • Create supportive environments for physical activity
