2026 Theme

"Controlling Hypertension Together: Check Your Blood Pressure Regularly, Defeat the Silent Killer"

Campaign Representation

Officially represented by the Red Ribbon.

Campaign Description

Established by the World Hypertension League in 2005 and observed on 17 May, this day (and the surrounding Hypertension Awareness Month) addresses hypertension — the leading preventable cause of premature death worldwide, affecting an estimated 1.4 billion people.

Theme Focus

Emphasizes shared responsibility across individuals, families, communities, health professionals, and health systems to increase regular blood pressure screening and improve control rates. Currently only about 1 in 4 people with hypertension have it adequately controlled, despite effective, affordable treatments being available.

Key Priorities

  • Increase public awareness of hypertension (high blood pressure)
  • Promote regular blood pressure screening and early detection
  • Improve access to accurate blood pressure measurement
  • Encourage early diagnosis and timely treatment
  • Support effective blood pressure control to reduce complications
  • Promote heart-healthy lifestyles, including healthy eating and regular physical activity
  • Reduce salt (sodium) intake and encourage balanced nutrition
  • Encourage smoking cessation and moderation of alcohol consumption
  • Improve medication adherence and long-term management
  • Prevent cardiovascular diseases, stroke, kidney disease, and other hypertension-related complications
  • Address disparities in hypertension prevention and care
  • Strengthen primary healthcare and community-based hypertension management
