Cataract Awareness Month

June 1, 2026 — June 30, 2026 Recurs yearly

Older adults participating in eye examinations and vision-care awareness activities during Cataracts Awareness Month.

2026 Theme

No single catchy global slogan — the observance runs as a general education campaign under the umbrella title "Cataract Awareness Month."

Campaign Representation

Officially represented by the Blue Ribbon.

Campaign Description

Observed every June, Cataract Awareness Month highlights cataracts — clouding of the eye's natural lens — and stresses that with a 95%+ surgical success rate, most vision loss from cataracts is preventable or reversible with timely care.

Theme Focus

Led primarily by Prevent Blindness (est. 1908) and supported by groups like the American Academy of Ophthalmology and ASCRS, the focus is on educating the public that cataracts are the leading cause of vision loss but are highly treatable via surgery, encouraging regular eye exams (especially for adults over 40–60), dispelling myths (e.g., that cataracts only affect aging adults), and promoting early detection.

Key Priorities

  • Eliminating surgical backlogs through mobile eye camps and outreach programs.
  • Funding free or subsidized cataract surgeries for low-income patients.
  • Providing post-operative follow-up care.
  • Educating communities on early symptoms such as blurred vision and glare.

Key Concepts

  • Lens opacity.
  • Age-related cataracts.
  • Phacoemulsification surgery.
  • Intraocular lenses.
  • Vision rehabilitation.
