Led by UNEP and held annually on 5 June since 1973, World Environment Day is the largest global platform for environmental public outreach, engaging tens of millions of people through events, campaigns, and community action worldwide.
Hosted by Azerbaijan in Baku, World Environment Day 2026 focused on climate change and the signals the planet is sending, from rising temperatures and heatwaves to changing ecosystems and other escalating climate impacts. UNEP's message was that humanity must not simply observe these signals but respond with action now: reducing emissions, adapting to unavoidable impacts and accelerating practical climate solutions.
The global campaign used #NowForClimate and encouraged governments, businesses, communities and individuals to treat their actions as signals that can build momentum for wider change.
