Campaign Description

Observed annually on 19 June, recognized by the UN in 2008, World Sickle Cell Day raises awareness of sickle cell disease, one of the most common genetic blood disorders, affecting over 300,000 newborns each year worldwide, with the highest burden in sub-Saharan Africa, India, and the Middle East.

Theme Focus

The global theme highlights reducing healthcare disparities so that patients everywhere — regardless of geography or income — receive timely diagnosis, quality treatment, and long-term care. Note: national campaigns vary — the UK's Sickle Cell Society runs its own 2026 theme, "Young Voices Rising," centered on empowering young people with sickle cell to feel informed, confident, and heard as they transition into adult healthcare services.
