Benign

Describing a condition, growth, or tumor that is not malignant and does not have the capacity to invade surrounding tissues or spread to distant sites.

The term is most commonly used when discussing tumors. A benign tumor can still cause significant problems if it grows large, compresses nearby structures, obstructs an organ, bleeds, or produces hormones.

“Benign” therefore means non-malignant, not necessarily harmless or insignificant.

QUICK FACT

Benign does not always mean harmless. Location and size can make a benign growth clinically important.
