World Asthma Day

May 4, 2026

A young person stands confidently while streams of clean teal-blue air flow toward glowing lungs visible within a transparent chest silhouette. In the background, dark clouds give way to bright sunlight, representing asthma awareness, symptom control, and the importance of respiratory health.

2026 Theme

"Access to anti-inflammatory inhalers for everyone with asthma – still an urgent need"

Campaign Representation

Officially represented by the Gray Ribbon.

Campaign Description

World Asthma Day is observed annually on the first Tuesday of May to raise awareness about asthma, improve understanding of the condition, promote effective management, and reduce preventable asthma-related illness and deaths. The campaign highlights the importance of early diagnosis, access to treatment, trigger avoidance, and personalized asthma action plans. 2026 campaign theme focus calls attention to the global disparities in obtaining daily controller medications (like inhaled corticosteroids) rather than over-relying on quick-relief rescue puffers.

Theme Focus

GINA's 2026 theme emphasizes that all people with asthma — including most preschool children — should have access to inhaled corticosteroid-containing medication, not just quick-relief inhalers. Lack of access to these anti-inflammatory inhalers, especially in low- and middle-income countries, contributes to 96% of global asthma deaths.

Key Priorities

  • Improving public awareness of asthma symptoms
  • Encouraging early diagnosis and appropriate treatment
  • Promoting correct inhaler use
  • Reducing asthma attacks and emergency hospital visits
  • Identifying and avoiding asthma triggers
  • Supporting self-management through asthma action plans
  • Improving access to essential asthma medicines
  • Addressing disparities in asthma care
  • Encouraging regular follow-up with healthcare providers
