Friction

Friction is the resistance that occurs when two surfaces move or attempt to move against each other.

On the skin, repeated friction can cause irritation, inflammation, and mechanical injury. Clothing, straps, helmets, masks, sports equipment, and other objects can create friction against the skin.

Repeated friction, particularly when combined with heat, sweat, or occlusion, can contribute to acne mechanica.

QUICK FACT

Friction can affect the skin even when there is no obvious injury or abrasion.
