Birthing Position

A birthing position is the posture a woman adopts during labor or childbirth to help deliver her baby.

Positions may include upright standing, sitting, kneeling, squatting, hands-and-knees, side-lying, or semi-reclined positions. Different positions can affect comfort, movement, pelvic mechanics, and the way healthcare professionals monitor or assist the birth.

Current evidence suggests there is no single best birthing position for every woman. The safest and most comfortable position depends on the mother’s health, the baby’s condition, the stage of labor, and whether medical intervention is needed.

QUICK FACT

Many women naturally change positions several times during labor rather than remaining in one position throughout childbirth.
