Cross-sectional

Describing an image or view that represents a slice through the body or another three-dimensional structure.

A cross-sectional image shows internal structures as though the body has been divided into thin sections. This allows structures that lie at different depths to be visualized separately.

CT and MRI commonly produce cross-sectional images, which can be viewed in different planes and sometimes reconstructed into three-dimensional images.

QUICK FACT

“Cross-sectional” describes the orientation or type of view, not a specific imaging technology.
