The organs and structures responsible for moving air into and out of the body and facilitating the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide.
The respiratory system includes the nose and upper airways, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, bronchioles, and lungs. The lungs contain microscopic air sacs called alveoli where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves it.
Breathing and gas exchange depend on coordinated function of the respiratory system, cardiovascular system, and nervous system.
QUICK FACT
The respiratory system does more than move air; its primary physiological purpose is to enable gas exchange between the air and blood.
COMMONLY CONFUSED WITH
Respiratory tract: primarily refers to the air passages through which air travels; the respiratory system encompasses these structures and the lungs and their gas-exchange functions.
