Sinusitis

Sinusitis is inflammation of one or more of the air-filled spaces, called paranasal sinuses, around the nose.

Sinusitis can cause nasal congestion, facial pressure or pain, reduced sense of smell, nasal discharge, and other symptoms. It may occur after a viral upper respiratory infection and can sometimes involve bacterial infection.

Sinusitis may be acute or chronic, depending on how long symptoms persist. The underlying cause and severity influence appropriate treatment.

QUICK FACT

Sinusitis is not automatically a bacterial infection. Many acute cases are associated with viral infections.
