2026 Theme

Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing

Campaign Description

Established by the UN General Assembly in 1993 and observed annually on 15 May, this day promotes awareness of social, economic, and demographic issues affecting families worldwide, tied this year to preparations for the Second World Summit for Social Development.

Theme Focus

“Families, Inequalities and Child Wellbeing” focuses on the connection between the conditions in which families live and the opportunities children have to grow, learn and remain healthy.

The theme recognizes that family well-being is strongly influenced by income security, access to healthcare and education, housing, childcare, parental leave, social protection and other essential services. When families experience persistent economic or social disadvantage, children can face consequences that extend into health, education and social mobility.

The 2026 observance therefore emphasizes investment in families not simply as a private matter, but as an important part of reducing inequality and improving outcomes for future generations.
