Campaign Description

World Osteoporosis Day raises awareness on prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of osteoporosis to reduce fragility fractures.

Theme Focus

The 2026 campaign emphasizes lifelong bone health rather than viewing osteoporosis as a condition that only matters in older age. The message follows the life course: build strong bones early, protect bone health throughout adulthood, and strengthen and protect vulnerable bones later in life or after osteoporosis/fracture.

The campaign also stresses that it is never too early, or too late, to take action. Bone health involves nutrition, physical activity, healthy lifestyle choices, awareness of risk factors, appropriate assessment, treatment when needed, and prevention of falls and fractures

Key Priorities

  • Building strong bones during childhood and adolescence
  • Maintaining bone and muscle health throughout adulthood
  • Adequate calcium, vitamin D and protein intake
  • Regular weight-bearing and muscle-strengthening activity
  • Balance and fall-prevention strategies
  • Understanding personal osteoporosis risk factors
  • Early assessment and diagnosis when appropriate
  • Timely treatment for people at increased fracture risk
  • Preventing subsequent fractures after an osteoporotic fracture
  • Maintaining mobility and independence
  • Reducing the burden of osteoporosis-related disability
  • Making osteoporosis prevention, diagnosis and treatment a health-system priority
  • Improving access to appropriate bone-health care
  • Screening high-risk postmenopausal women
