Campaign Description

Observed annually on 20 June since 2001, World Refugee Day honors the courage and resilience of refugees while mobilizing political will and resources so they can not only survive but thrive. Refugee Week (15–21 June) runs alongside it with the complementary theme "Courage."

Theme Focus

Marking the 75th anniversary of the 1951 Refugee Convention, UNHCR's 2026 theme stresses that safety is not divisible; no community is truly secure while people forced to flee are denied protection. It calls for renewed commitment to non-refoulement (never returning refugees to danger) and dignified, rights-based treatment amid over 117 million forcibly displaced people worldwide.

Key Priorities

  • Protect the right to seek asylum and international refugee protection.
  • Ensure safety, dignity and essential services throughout displacement.
  • Maintain continuity of healthcare, medications, vaccination and other essential services.
  • Address mental health and psychosocial needs among displaced people.
  • Provide culturally sensitive and inclusive healthcare.
  • Support maternal, child and reproductive health during displacement.
  • Strengthen disease surveillance, outbreak preparedness and emergency response.
  • Improve access to safe water, sanitation, nutrition and adequate housing.
  • Support refugee inclusion in education, employment and community life.
  • Strengthen support for communities that host refugees.
  • Give refugees meaningful participation in decisions affecting their health and lives.
  • Pursue durable solutions, including safe and voluntary return when conditions permit, resettlement and local integration.
