Pregnancy

Pregnancy is the period during which a baby develops inside the uterus, beginning after implantation and ending with childbirth. It could also be defined as the physiological state in which a fertilized egg and subsequently developing embryo or fetus grows within the uterus.

A typical pregnancy lasts about 40 weeks, measured from the first day of the last menstrual period. During this time, the mother’s body undergoes remarkable physical, hormonal, and emotional changes to support the growth and development of the fetus.

Regular prenatal care helps monitor the health of both the mother and baby, identify potential complications early, and prepare for labor and delivery.

QUICK FACT

Pregnancy is commonly described in three trimesters, but fetal development and maternal changes occur continuously throughout the entire pregnancy.

COMMONLY CONFUSED WITH

Gestation: Pregnancy refers to the entire condition of carrying a developing baby, while gestation often refers more specifically to the duration or timeframe of the offspring’s development.
