Organ Failure

Severe loss of function of an organ or organ system such that it can no longer adequately perform essential physiological functions.

Organ failure can affect organs such as the kidneys, liver, lungs, heart, or brain. It may develop suddenly or progressively, depending on the underlying cause.

Severe organ failure can be life-threatening and may require intensive medical support, such as mechanical ventilation, dialysis, circulatory support, or transplantation, depending on the organ involved.

QUICK FACT

Organ failure does not necessarily mean that an organ has completely stopped functioning; critically inadequate function may be enough to constitute failure.

COMMONLY CONFUSED WITH

Organ damage: structural or functional injury to an organ that may be mild, moderate, or severe and does not necessarily amount to organ failure.
