Sepsis Awareness Month

Sepsis Awareness Month was founded in 2011 by Sepsis Alliance to educate both the public and healthcare professionals on early recognition, rapid treatment, and the critical signs of sepsis, a medical emergency where the body's overactive response to an infection triggers severe, life-threatening organ damage.

Celebrating 15 years of Sepsis Awareness Month in 2026, the campaign remains dedicated to preventing infections, catching sepsis early, and ensuring timely treatment by educating the public and healthcare professionals to save lives and prevent permanent disability.

• Prevent infection: infection prevention is an important part of reducing the risk of sepsis.
• Recognize sepsis early: improve understanding of its signs and symptoms so people know when urgent medical assessment is needed.
• Act quickly: sepsis is a medical emergency, and timely diagnosis and treatment are important.
• Strengthen healthcare education: improve sepsis knowledge among healthcare professionals as well as the public.
• Support survivors: recognize the physical, psychological and functional effects that can persist after sepsis.
• Improve health literacy: help people understand the relationship between infection and sepsis and when to seek medical care.
