Sebaceous gland

A sebaceous gland is a small oil-producing gland attached to a hair follicle that releases sebum onto the surface of the skin.

Sebaceous glands are found throughout most of the body and help keep the skin and hair soft and protected. Increased activity of these glands is one of the factors involved in acne development.

Quick fact

Sebaceous glands are absent on the palms of the hands and the soles of the feet.
