Keratinocyte

A keratinocyte is the main type of cell found in the epidermis.

Keratinocytes produce keratin and form the protective outer layer of the skin. As new keratinocytes are produced, older ones gradually move towards the skin surface, where they eventually die and are naturally shed.

Quick Fact

Keratinocytes make up about 90% of the cells in the epidermis.
