Melanocyte

A melanocyte is a specialized pigment-producing cell that produces melanin and transfers it to nearby cells, particularly keratinocytes.

Melanocytes are located primarily in the basal layer of the epidermis and have branching extensions through which melanin-containing structures can be transferred to surrounding keratinocytes.

Melanocytes play an important role in determining skin and hair pigmentation and in providing some protection against ultraviolet(uv) radiation.

QUICK FACT

People of different skin colors generally have a similar number of melanocytes. Differences in skin colour are mainly due to the amount and type of melanin produced.
