Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH) is a darkened area of skin that remains after inflammation or injury has healed.

After an acne lesion resolves, the affected skin may produce extra melanin, leaving a brown, grey, or black mark. PIH is especially common in people with medium to dark skin tones and is not the same as a scar.
