A comedone is a blocked hair follicle caused by a buildup of sebum and dead skin cells.
Comedones are the earliest acne lesions and occur in two main forms:
- Open comedone (blackhead)
- Closed comedone (whitehead)
They are usually not inflamed but may develop into larger inflammatory acne lesions.
