A machine that supports or controls breathing by moving air or an oxygen-containing gas into and out of the lungs.
A ventilator may be used when a person cannot breathe adequately on their own or needs assistance maintaining appropriate oxygen and carbon dioxide levels. Depending on the situation, breathing support may be provided through a mask or through a tube placed in the airway.
Mechanical ventilation can be lifesaving, but it requires careful monitoring because it can also cause complications.
QUICK FACT
A ventilator does not simply “give oxygen.” It primarily provides mechanical assistance with breathing, although the gas delivered can contain a higher concentration of oxygen.
COMMONLY CONFUSED WITH
Oxygen therapy: supplies supplemental oxygen but does not necessarily provide mechanical assistance with breathing.
