Campaign Description

World Prematurity Day was founded in 2008 by the European Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants (EFCNI, now the Global Foundation for the Care of Newborn Infants) together with European parent organizations, and grew into a worldwide movement with partners like March of Dimes. In 2025, the World Health Assembly formally added it to WHO's official calendar — and as part of that move, the date is shifting in 2026 from its traditional November 17 to November 15, to avoid overlapping with World Cervical Cancer Elimination Day. The campaign highlights the challenges of preterm birth, advocates for improved neonatal care, and promotes quality maternal and newborn healthcare, early intervention, family-centered care, and equitable access to life-saving services that help premature babies survive and thrive. Purple is the day's signature color.
