A water-related illness is a disease or health condition associated with the presence, quality, availability, or use of water, including exposure to contaminated water, unsafe recreational water, water-associated organisms, or inadequate water and sanitation.
Water-related illnesses can arise in several ways. Drinking water contaminated with disease-causing microorganisms can transmit infections such as cholera, typhoid fever, and certain forms of diarrheal disease. Contact with contaminated water can expose people to organisms that cause skin or eye infections, while particular activities in freshwater environments can lead to infections such as schistosomiasis.
Some water-related illnesses result from chemicals or other harmful substances in water rather than infectious organisms. Inadequate access to safe water can also contribute to dehydration, poor hygiene, and the spread of infections. In addition, standing water can provide breeding sites for mosquitoes that transmit diseases such as malaria and dengue.
Prevention depends on the type of exposure. Measures include providing safe drinking water, maintaining sanitation systems, practicing appropriate hygiene, managing mosquito breeding sites, and following local guidance about recreational water safety.
QUICK FACT
Not every water-related illness is waterborne. Some are transmitted by organisms that live in water, some arise through contact with contaminated water, and others are associated with insects that breed in or near water.
COMMONLY CONFUSED WITH
- Waterborne disease: An illness transmitted through water contaminated with infectious organisms or, in some cases, harmful substances.
- Water-washed disease: An illness whose spread is facilitated by insufficient water for personal hygiene and sanitation.
- Water-based disease: An illness caused by organisms that spend part of their life cycle in water or aquatic hosts.
- Water-related vector-borne disease: An illness transmitted by vectors, such as mosquitoes, whose breeding or survival is associated with water.
