Rheumatoid Arthritis

A chronic autoimmune disease that primarily causes inflammation of the joints and can also affect other organs and tissues.

The immune system mistakenly attacks tissues involved in joint function, particularly the synovial lining. Persistent inflammation can cause pain, swelling, stiffness, joint damage, and loss of function.

Rheumatoid arthritis is systemic and can affect areas outside the joints, including the skin, eyes, lungs, heart, and blood vessels.

QUICK FACT

Rheumatoid arthritis is not simply caused by “wear and tear” of the joints; it is an autoimmune disease.
