Cosmetic residue is material left on the skin after the application, use, or incomplete removal of a cosmetic or personal-care product.
Residue can include components of makeup, sunscreen, moisturizer, hair products, or other topical products. Depending on the product and circumstances, accumulated residue can contribute to irritation, follicular occlusion, or contact dermatitis.
Cosmetic residue is not automatically harmful and is not necessarily the cause of acne. Product formulation, individual sensitivity, frequency of use, and removal practices all matter.
QUICK FACT
The presence of residue on the skin does not automatically mean that pores are “clogged.”
