Dermis

The layer of skin beneath the epidermis that provides much of the skin‘s strength, elasticity, nourishment, and structural support.

The dermis contains connective tissue, collagen, elastic fibers, blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and immune cells. It nourishes the epidermis and plays an important role in wound healing, temperature regulation, and sensation.

It has two main regions: the superficial papillary dermis and the deeper reticular dermis.

QUICK FACT

  • Unlike the epidermis, the dermis contains blood vessels that supply nutrients and oxygen to the skin.
  • Most tattoos are placed in the dermis because this layer is more stable than the constantly renewing epidermis.
