Hypodermis (Subcutaneous Tissue)

The hypodermis, also called the subcutaneous tissue, is the deepest layer beneath the skin.

It consists mainly of fat (adipose tissue) and connective tissue. The hypodermis cushions underlying structures, helps regulate body temperature, stores energy, and anchors the skin to muscles and other tissues.

The thickness of the hypodermis varies depending on factors such as age, sex, body region, and nutritional status.

Quick Fact

Although commonly described as a layer of the skin, the hypodermis is technically located beneath the skin.
