Dermis

The dermis is the middle layer of the skin that provides strength, flexibility, and support.

Located beneath the epidermis, the dermis contains connective tissue, collagen, elastic fibres, blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, sebaceous glands, sweat glands, and immune cells. It nourishes the epidermis and plays an important role in wound healing, temperature regulation, and sensation.

Quick Fact

Most tattoos are placed in the dermis because this layer is more stable than the constantly renewing epidermis.
