Melanocyte

A melanocyte is a specialised cell that produces the pigment melanin.

Melanocytes are located mainly in the basal layer of the epidermis. They produce melanin and transfer it to neighboring skin cells, helping protect them from ultraviolet (UV) damage.

Quick Fact

People of different skin colors generally have a similar number of melanocytes. Differences in skin colour are mainly due to the amount and type of melanin produced.
