A nodule is a large, firm lump that develops beneath the skin.
Nodules may occur in many medical conditions, including acne, cysts, thyroid disease, rheumatoid arthritis, and certain infections or tumours. In acne, nodules form because of deep inflammation around a hair follicle and often require medical treatment.
